Back Deck Roll

The Back Deck roll is the fastest and safest way to get back upright anytime you find yourself upside down leaning back or if you find yourself falling over leaning back.

How to do a Back Deck roll

If your using a right hand control paddle and your right handed your probably going to want to start on the left side of the boat and finish rolling up on the right blade. The feather of your paddles going to make this a lot easier.

1. Lie all the way back and look over your left shoulder.

2. Take the paddle and put it parallel to your boat on the left side.

3. Rock your wrists back so the power face of both blades is pointing straight down into the water.

4. Then rock your wrists back a little more so the part of your paddle blade thats just away from the boat is actually lifted up a little bit. This will make it easier to keep the blade on the surface.

5. Fall over slowly, leaning back with your head touching the deck.

6. When your upside down. Put your paddle complete perpendicular to you right in front of your face with your wrists rocked back. At this stage your going to be looking straight back behind you.

7. Look to the left and reach your head, body and paddle of to the left side of the boat

8. Then reach the right blade out with your head on the surface.

9. Now do a hip snap, nice and strong just like normal. Don’t pull down on the blade as this will cause the paddle to sink and put unnecessary strain on your shoulders

10. Finish lying back on, looking at the blade your working with, on the right.

Top tips

Make sure you rock your wrists way back as this will open the angle on the edge on your leading paddle blade helping it glide across the water and will stop it sinking, which would make the move way harder.

A back deck roll should not hurt. If your using a good hip snap you should put very little pressure on your paddle blade and therefore very little pressure on your shoulders. If you are feeling pressure on your shoulders go back to practicing your hip snap before continuing developing your roll.

Every time you practice a back deck roll once you’ve swung the paddle out to the side and got your head to the surface, 100% focus your attention on rolling your boat back under you with your hips and not pulling down on the paddle at all. Thats what makes or breaks every roll and thats whats going to keep you safe.

A quick back deck roll is way safer then having to tuck all the way forwards to do a C2C roll or screw roll if you fall over leaning back or on the back deck of your kayak.

It is possible to do a dry back deck roll and not even put your face in the water.
