Many kayakers set goals such as, “I will run my first class 4 rapid this year.” It is great to have a big picture goal like that, but specific skill related goals direct our attention towards areas for improvement. Examples of specific goals could be, “I will improve my combat roll” or “I will improve my stroke power and efficiency” or “I will learn how to catch smaller eddys.”
If you want to get better this year, choose a few specific goals, learn the proper technique, and then practice in easy rapids! If one of your specific goals is to get better at eddying out, then watch this video and practice eddy hopping down you local run.
