2011 was an exhilarating year for me! I started out with a bang at my favorite creek, Brush Creek, where I was first in the Jr. Women’s creek race and Jr. Slalom, and ended with one of my favorite American Whitewater fundraisers, the Feather River Festival. In between, I won 10 gold medals at the North American Jr. Olympics in Lyons, Co. defended my Age Group National slalom title and became the Jr. Women’s National Freestyle Champion and point series winner at Kelly’s Whitewater Park in Cascade, ID. I was honored with being named to the top 10 Sports Illustrated Kid’s Sportkid of the year. I competed throughout the west including California, Nevada, Wyoming, Colorado, Montana, and Idaho. I was on the road for over 2 months and met so many incredible people; it was awesome!
I would like to give special thanks to Jackson Kayak for making the best boats in the most awesome colors, Kokatat for the most incredible gear, Snapdragon for bombproof skirts, and Keen for the most durable, longest lasting, great looking and performing footwear! I also would like to thank the Reno River Festival for having slalom and bringing back the jr. competition, Nick Troutman, Jackson Kayak and RMOC for letting me help with clinics during Paddlefest, Colin Kemp for helping me with my freestyle tricks, and Mike and Gina Hyde for making the transition (due to high water) from Golden, Co. to Lyons, Co. for the Jr. Olympics (thanks Lyons!) as smooth as possible.
In 2011, I started my own jewelry making business with proceeds of each sale benefitting The Jason Craig Recovery Fund and American Whitewater. So far, because of your purchases, I have raised over $2500 for JC and AW. Thank you everyone for the support and I hope you keep me in mind for your Christmas shopping.
I am happy to report that I had a few personal first descents this year, including E to P on the South Yuba (thanks Pat!) and the Creek to the Peak charity race on the Dumont to Idaho Springs section of Clear Creek in Colorado for GOALS (Get outside and learn something). I hope to do this fundraiser again to help kids get outside next year too!
For 2012, I would like to have consistent cartwheels on both sides, learn to do a split wheel, perfect my Space Godzillas on both sides, and learn to do a McNasty. I hope to defend my titles and encourage other kids to get out and boat, but most of all, I just want to be on the water having fun!
