Once again I headed to the Southeast this summer to instruct some very excited and eager kids in Western North Carolina. This has been a part of my life for over a decade, returning to teach and enjoy the rivers that I am so fond of. Who could not love the mighty Green River Narrows, it draws people far and wide and has kept me returning looking for smoother clean lines.

Each year I have been fortunate to instruct more and more kids and this year I estimated that I instructed nearly 200 different kids in paddling. Phew, that’s a whole lot of river time. I had a bit of a personal goal and set out this year to not have one day off the water all summer and I am happy to say that I achieved my goal. I did get a slight shoulder twinge that confined me to the lake for two days, but after that rest I managed to make it back no worries.

Teaching kids is extremely rewarding for me and I am happy to see so many kids as excited about boating as I am. This year being part of helping a bunch of kids with their first roll and first whitewater experience really keeps me drawn to this sport that has become my life.

I was also very fortunate to head up to Canada and instruct on ‘Huck Canada’, a kayak program with Falling Creek Camp for kids and teens with a stellar instructional team that included Nick Troutman. Such an amazing trip for sure taking kids on the biggest whitewater they have ever seen, not to mention some of the biggest holes too! Such an amazing time up there with Nick, that river really does have it all and even though I have spent some time up there before, every trip to the Ottawa really is exciting. All paddlers need to experience the Ottawa at least once in their life. By day one on the trip, everyone was already saying it was the best trip ever. Check out the video of the trip.

I am back in Australia now getting ready for another summer down here, ah, once again the endless summer continues…… If only everyone could experience continual summers. NC, TN, SC, GA, WV, NY, Canada and Australia, Yeehaw. I would like to thank those who have helped me throughout this year including Jackson Kayak. Thanks guys, you really float my boat.
